Out With the Old and In With the New
After reading pages 459-468, "Everything Bad is Good for You:Games", I have come to an opinion and have agreed with the last two pages of this essay. Obviously in today's world technology is being used more than it has ever been used before. Not many people can survive throughout the day with their cell phones, ipods, televisions, etc. With all this new technology, there is no time to read books anymore. In the beginning of this essay, the author describes how people say that video games are ruining the childrens' brains and turning them into zombies. People say that video games promote violence and other negative influences towards children and that children should be reading books. Who says book do not have violence in them? Just because a book does not have a television screen inside it does not mean the book can promote violence or other negative influences with words. Even when children go to school they see that technology is used more than books. In my high school, Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, every class had a smartboard and each lesson was taught through the computer. Today, schools have things called ebooks, which are books that are downloaded on the computer so children do not have to lug heavy textbooks home to do homework. By putting the book online, this is promoting technology use as now the student is using his or her computer to complete homework. Now why can't a child learn from a video game? Not all games are violent and negative. Let's say that a child has bought a basketball game. By playing the basketball game, the child could learn new basketball moves and new basketball jumpshots. I am not saying a child cannot learn from a book, but with all the technology a child has available to him or her today, no one has time to read a book. Just by using google a child could find any research he needs for an essay instead of spending hours in the library looking through books for information. In my opinion, books are not boring, nobody just has time for them anymore with the modern technology available today.
